Workshop Overview

This fun and interactive deaf awareness workshop provides an intimate look into deafness and the deaf community.   The participant will learn what is meant by deaf culture as well as learning sign language basics.  Additional topics such as how to accommodate a person who is deaf, how to use a sign language interpreter, and what technology is available to assist the deaf population will also be discussed.


  • To expand your knowledge of people who are deaf and hard of hearing to provide better service to this population.
  • To acquire communication skills to interact with deaf or hard of hearing co-workers or clients.
  • To learn how to accommodate a client or employee who is deaf or hard of hearing.
  • To identify community resources available to assist this population.

Facilitator Bio

Patricia Sieglen-Perry has worked in the field of disability for over 23 years and has specialized in deafness for most of her career. Ms. Sieglen-Perry obtained a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from San Diego State University. She was a counselor for the deaf and then selected as the Executive Director at Deaf Community Services where she expanded the services and scope of the non-profit for 13 years. Her expertise with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and knowledge of other disability groups secured her a position with the City of San Diego as the Disability Services Coordinator. As such, Patricia wrote the City's ADA transition and self-evaluation plans and coordinated with various city departments to implement both new policies and the reduction of physical barriers to the people with disabilities. Most recently, Patricia is working as a community sign language interpreter and a trainer on deafness and disability issues.
