The 2014 DLA Conference “Cultural Transformation” will probe deeper into the subject of transforming a culture into one of true Inclusiveness and ultimately Acceptance. Our compelling workshops will explore the impact and systemic change that organizations, communities and individuals can have on Transformation.

COUNTERING BIAS: INTERCULTURAL AGILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS

Presented by Figure 8 Consulting, LLC | April Lewis & Carol French

Summary: Think of this session as intercultural strength training with fast-paced experiential exercises designed to enhance intercultural effectiveness and support the characteristics of cultural agility. A variety of methodologies and activities will provide a deeper dive into what it means to be interculturally agile in our multicultural organizations. 

Objectives: 
  • Review the mechanisms, evolutionary nature and impact of unconscious bias; 
  • Explore the elements of cultural agility: self awareness, cultural curiosity and empathy; 
  • Understand how cultural agility acts as an antidote to bias and provides the basis for responding flexibly, respectfully, and effectively across a variety of cultural contexts and circumstances.


POWER OF CULTURE AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION
 

Presented by Mesha Mott, Executive HR Consultant

Summary: This session will explore the power of culture and how it serves as a key driver of successful implementation of a sound diversity and inclusion initiative. The world is no longer one size fits all. It comes with many shapes, sizes and preferences. Culture, the system of values, beliefs and behaviors that a groups subscribes, is a key driver of not only how one will respond in various situations but also the mechanism by which businesses gauge how to effectively manage its workforce and respond to the needs of the marketplace.  


Objectives: The objective is to share what culture is, how it plays out in the workplace and what it means to the overall business model. 

  • Gain an understanding of What Culture is 
  • Gain an understanding of marketplace trends driving the importance of cultural awareness 
  • Recognize ways to foster an environment built on awareness, mutual understanding and respect

YOUTH TRACK - 7 HABITS OF SUCCESSFUL TEENS
 

Presented by Meleika A. Wadley, MSSA, LCSW

Summary: The 7 Habits of Successful Teens is a workshop that is based on the best-selling book by Sean Covey and the No. 1 best-selling business book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. The book provides youth a set of proven tools to deal successfully with real life. This workshop uses interactive activities and multi-media that will provide character education and leadership development with a framework for boosting self-image, building, friendships, resisting peer pressure, achieving goals, improving communication and relationship. 

Objectives: Workshop can help teens
  • Improve relationships with family and friends. 
  • Increase self confidence and self-esteem. 
  • Make smarter decisions. 
  • Define their values and what matters most to them. 
  • Recognize and prioritize their goals. 
  • Find balance between school, work, and friend.


DIVERSITY & INCLUSIVE AWARDS 

Our Diversity and Inclusive Awards honoring businesses and employers that exhibit outstanding Diversity and Inclusive strategies, will celebrate and recognize nominees that lead by example, creating an inclusive environment that enhances and strengthens the community. 

Nominations for the 2014 Diversity Leadership Alliance Award Ceremony will be accepted from Friday, August 1, 2014 through Friday, October 17, 2014. All nominations must be received by Diversity Leadership Alliance no later than 5:00 pm MST on October 14, 2014. (Click here for nomination forms)
